Electric Car Charging Point - A Brief Guide

Having an electric car charging point is an integral part of being an electric vehicle (EV) owner. Needless to say, EVs do not have an engine like your regular car. So, rather than filling your car up liters upon liters of fossil fuels, you simply plug your car into its electric car charging station to charge it up. As a matter of fact, EVs are closer to the smart device in your pocket when it comes to charging than the day-to-day car. The average EV owner does 80 percent of their car charging at home. At EcoPlex we wanted to provide you with an in-depth guide to your EV charging stations.

What are the different types of electric car charging stations?

Charging an EV is a relatively simple process: just like any home appliance, you simply plug your car into a EV car charger. However, you might not know that all EV charging stations are not the same. At EcoPlex, we install an EV charging station by simply plugging it into a standard wall outlet, while others require a custom installation. It is important to note that the time it takes to charge your car, as well as the cost of installation to electricity, will be dependent on the charger you use.EV chargers fall under one of three categories: Level 1 charging stations, Level 2 charging stations, and DC Fast Chargers.

Level 1 EV charging stations

Level 1 chargers use a 120 V AC plug. This can be plugged into your standard wall outlet. It may come as a surprise that unlike other chargers, Level 1 chargers do not require the installation of any additional equipment. These chargers on average deliver 3 to 8 km of range per hour of charging. This makes them relatively effective for at home use, but less so for on-the-go charging.Level 1 chargers are the least costly electric vehicle charging station option, but as you might expect, that comes with its downsides. The main downside is the time it takes to charge your EV, which is quite a while! The only time this would be an effective means of charging is overnight for an individual who does low daily mileage in their EV.Contact Us for more information on this charging option.

Level 2 EV charging stations

Level 2 chargers are mainly in both residential and commercial settings. These EV charging stations make use of a 240 V or 208 V plug. Unfortunately, unlike Level 1 chargers, these car chargers can't be plugged into a standard wall outlet. Instead, they are installed by a qualified team like EcoPlex. Additionally, they can be installed as part of a solar panel system. This is where you can make big savings in the medium to long term!Level 2 electric car chargers deliver between 16 and 100 km of range per hour of charging. This is far beyond that of the level 1 option. This electric car charging station can fully charge an electric car battery in as little as two hours. This is ideal for home charging due to the ease and speed of charging. It is also perfect for business owners who want to provide a charging service to their customers, which is increasingly becoming an attractive proposition for businesses. Contact Us for more information on this charging option.

DC Fast Chargers (Level 3)

DC Fast Chargers, also known as Level 3 electric vehicle charging stations, can offer as much as 100 to 160 km of range for your electric car in as little as 20 minutes of charging. It should be noted, that this option is typically only used in commercial and industrial applications.Unfortunately, not all electric cars can be charged with the use of Fast Chargers. The majority of plug ion hybrids and EVs fall into this category. The Nissan Leaf is a popular example of an electric car that is DC Fast Charger enabled. Increasingly, newer models have this capability. So if you were to avail of this option, you'd get use out of it long term, particularly in a commercial setting.
