Electrical Upgrades For Modern Energy Systems

Most Irish properties built before 2005 were never wired for Solar, a 7kW EV Charger or a Heat Pump running all day. We get your existing electrics ready so the new system can go in without delay.

  • RECI registered electrical contractor
  • Safe Electric certification on completion
  • Work to the National Wiring Rules (ET101 and I.S. 10101)

The electrics have to be ready before the renewables go in

Ecoplex Electrical Upgrades prepares existing electrical installations in your home or business premises for modern energy systems such as Solar, EV Charging and Heat Pumps, so your new renewable energy installation can go ahead without delay.

All electrical work in Ireland must be carried out or certified by a RECI (Registered Electrical Contractors of Ireland) registered electrician to meet the National Wiring Rules (ET101). Ecoplex is RECI registered, so the work is done to the applicable Irish electrical safety standards and signed off properly.

The usual problem

10mm² tails where you now need 16mm²

Most houses were wired with 10mm² meter tails, sized for the load of the day. Add Solar, a Storage Battery, a Heat Pump or an EV Charger and the cable is no longer rated for the electricity going through it. The upgrade to 16mm² is usually the first thing that has to happen.

Once the tails are upgraded the rest of the installation has to keep up. In most properties that means some combination of:

  • A consumer unit with spare ways and RCBO protection.
  • Main earthing and bonding brought up to current rules.
  • A dedicated circuit for the EV Charger, Solar inverter or Heat Pump.
  • Surge protection where the installation requires it.

Our services include

Everything between the meter and your new system

Six jobs that come up again and again on pre-2005 homes. We handle each one ourselves and coordinate the Safe Electric side so nothing is waiting on a second contractor.

Modern labelled consumer unit with RCBO protection

Fuse Board upgrades

Old rewireable boards swapped for a modern consumer unit with RCBO protection and spare ways for Solar, a Battery or an EV Charger.

Green and yellow earthing conductors terminated on a bar inside a consumer unit

Tails and Meter upgrades

Undersized tails are the most common reason solar or EV Charger installations get held up. We upgrade them, sort the earthing and coordinate the Safe Electric side.

Earthing and Bonding

Main and supplementary bonding brought up to current regulations, earth rods installed and tested.

Outdoor socket and earth rod cover beside a modern front door

EV Charger installation

Charger fitted on a dedicated circuit with the right protection, load management where the supply is tight, and the paperwork for the SEAI grant.

Heat Pump electrical readiness

A Heat Pump is a large load running for long periods, so the same upgrades apply: 16mm² tails, a board with capacity, and correct earthing. We get the electrics ready before the heat pump installer arrives and certify them after.

Electrician testing a distribution board with a multimeter

Periodic inspection reports

Full test and inspection of the existing installation, with a written report listing what passed and what needs attention.

How it works

Five steps to feelgood

We make upgrading your home's electrical installation straightforward, transparent and compliant with current Irish requirements. We assess what you have, tell you what needs attention, give you a clear quote and do the work properly.

Start with an enquiry
  1. 1

    Submit your enquiry

Complete our contact form and select "Electrical Upgrade" as your enquiry type. Tell us a little about your property, the work you are considering and any electrical issues you have noticed. Our team will contact you to talk it through and arrange the next step.

  2. 2

    Electrical survey

We arrange a convenient date and time to inspect your existing installation. Depending on the scope, we assess the wiring, distribution board, circuits, switches, sockets and other relevant components, and identify anything that needs upgrading, replacing or a closer look against the current installation standards.

The survey lets us understand the work properly, rather than estimating from the age or appearance of the installation.

  3. 3

    Clear, written quote

After the survey you get a clear, itemised quotation. Where appropriate it sets out scope, materials and labour separately, so you can see exactly what is included. If we find issues that were not apparent at the initial assessment, we discuss them with you before carrying out any additional work.

  4. 4

    Electrical upgrade work

Once you are happy to proceed, we arrange a suitable date for the agreed works. Our electricians work carefully, with consideration for your home and as little disruption as possible. Depending on the survey, that can mean upgrading or replacing wiring, circuits, sockets, switches, lighting, the distribution board and other components. All work follows the applicable Irish electrical requirements and the agreed scope.

  5. 5

    Testing and certification

On completion the work is inspected and tested to verify the installation is safe and meets the applicable requirements of I.S. 10101. Where the work falls within the requirements for certification, the appropriate Safe Electric certificate is provided. That gives you documented confirmation the work was completed, tested and certified by a registered electrical contractor.

Benefits of the upgrade

A professional electrical upgrade, from survey to certification

From your first enquiry through to testing and certification, you get one complete service with clear communication, transparent pricing and proper workmanship at every stage.

Safety

Modern wiring standards reduce the risk of electrical faults.

Improved reliability

Your electrical system can support current and future demands, including the Solar, Battery, EV Charger or Heat Pump you add next.

Compliance

Your installation stays up to date with the latest standards and regulations, with Safe Electric certification to show for it.

SEAI grants

No standalone SEAI grant exists for electrical upgrades

Unlike Insulation, Heating, Windows and Doors, and Solar, electrical upgrades do not have a dedicated grant. Electrical work can sometimes be included within a One Stop Shop deep retrofit package alongside other measures. If you are planning more than one upgrade, ask us about that route when you enquire and we will tell you what applies to your home.

Get the electrics sorted before the installer turns up

Tell us what you are planning and what you have noticed. We will book a survey, give you a written quote and certify the work when it is done.
